Refined Coconut Oil

by Anonymous

I went to the health food store and only found refined coconut oil… The jar says it can be used for hair and skin… Would it be any good?

Hi,

As long as it’s not hydrogenated coconut oil, it’s still good. “Refined” is still okay, but not “Hydrogenated.”

Due to the refining process, refined coconut oil has already lost much, if not all (depending on the degree of processing), of the phytonutrients such as antioxidants found in the raw coconut oil.

Because Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA), the main fat molecules in coconut oil are very stable and resistant to heat, refined coconut oil contains pretty much the same levels of MCFAs found in Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO).

Since saturated MCFAs are behind most of coconut oil’s amazing health benefits, refined coconut oil is still considered a healthy oil.

Hope this helps,
Frederick
