Coconut Oil for Hair: Everything You Want to Know

Coconut oil for hair is exceedingly invigorating. For hair-care, no other oil can compare!  Unlike almost all other hair-care products, coconut oil is safe to use even in its raw form. It has that natural creamy texture and is virtually free from harsh chemicals and other additives.  For thousands of years, it has nourished the crowning glory of generations. Now it’s used in shampoos, creams and other hair-care products.

Coconut oil for hair can be just as good, even better more likely, than a $60 salon treatment. This is because unlike a man made treatment, it is 100% natural with no chemicals, alcohols or silicones that can irritate the scalp and hair. The coconut oil treatment is only a tiny fraction of the cost of salon treatments, and you can do it yourself in the comfort of your own home.

My Own Experience

Regular coconut oil use can help prevent hair loss by encouraging hair growth. I am actually living proof of this. My hair was thinning at an alarming rate. So after many hours of research, I decided to give coconut oil a try.

Every day I massaged two tablespoons of oil into my hair and scalp, and waited for thirty minutes before washing the oil out. After about a month, my hair got thicker, especially up top (my main problem area.) I also noticed tiny new hairs growing along my hairline. I was thrilled at the new hair growth as well as how decrease in hair loss.

This experience was really the starting point of my coconut oil journey! I knew back then that I discovered something special.Coconut oil for hair featured image

How To Use Coconut Oil for Hair

For best results, dermatologists recommend using pure, refined, and virgin coconut oil. Massage the oil into your scalp, promoting hair growth by stimulating circulation and blood flow. Since coconut oil has been found to decrease protein loss in hair, the addition of the oil to your scalp will help to prevent hair fall as well as make the strands stronger and therefore less likely to split or break. Another benefit of coconut oil, is it’s antibacterial properties. This added protection ensures scalp health and helps to prevent infections that contribute to hair loss. Combing the coconut oil through your hair will seal moisture in from follicle to tip, not only providing added shine, but protection from heat and environmental damage as well.

Benefits of Using Coconut Oil

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science compared coconut oil with sunflower oil and mineral oil, the two most widely used in hair oil formulations. The researchers concluded that of the three oils, only coconut oil was able to reduce protein loss for both damaged and undamaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product. This preservation of protein in the hair is a result of lauric acid, capric acid and vitamin E, ingredients found in coconut oil. Its small molecular size enables Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) to penetrate inside the hair shaft, protecting it from protein loss. MCT-rich coconut oil can pass freely through the cell membrane for easy absorption, giving your hair a soft, smooth texture.

Sebum, the fatty substance secreted by the sebaceous glands, protects and waterproofs your hair and scalp skin to keep them from drying and breaking. Guess what? Like coconut oil, sebum contains MCTs.

Coconut Oil Hair Treatments

Coconut oil is great for your hair as well as your scalp! It works as a treatment for many common hair and scalp problems.

Prevent Hair Loss

As I described in the beginning of the article, my own hair loss was what began my journey with coconut oil. By regularly massaging the oil into my hair, I was reducing the protein loss. My hair became stronger and less likely to break and fall.

As a Conditioner and Moisturizer

Because it’s rich in fatty acids, coconut oil is a great hair conditioner that nourishes and moisturizes both the scalp and hair. It is the only oil known to actually penetrate the hair follicle creating healthy strands. Coconut oil gives dry, thirsty hair the moisture it needs. The smoothing properties also make it ideal for calming frizzy, or dry damaged hair.

For Curly/Natural Hair

Curly or coarse hair is often more difficult to work with because it can be dry or unruly. Maintaining beautiful waves or ringlets can be difficult with damaged hair. Applying coconut oil all over your hair before washing can help. After washing, add a small amount to help detangle hair. Also rubbing a small amount between your palms and working all over dry hair can help with shine, control and frizziness.

To Promote Hair Growth

Massaging coconut oil into your scalp both improves circulation and conditions to the follicle promoting faster and healthier hair growth. The oil has been proven to penetrate and repair damaged hair, improving overall hair health. Hair growth is boosted by the nutrients and antioxidants found in coconut oil. Your hair will be stronger and healthier as well as encouraging to new growth.

Prevent and Control Dandruff and Itchy Scalp

Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA), the primary fat molecules in coconut oil, kill Malassezia globosa, the dandruff-causing yeast-like fungus that lives on the scalp and feeds on skin oils. These MCFAs are unique in that they have a very small molecular structure, allowing them to easily pass into the cells of these viruses to kill them. Not only will coconut oil treat and rid your scalp of dandruff, it will also give quick relief of the itching caused by both dandruff and dry scalp. This is because the small structure also enables the coconut oil to penetrate into the shaft of the hair which allows conditioning from the inside out, unlike other conditioners that work from the outside of the hair.

Lice Treatment

The fatty acids in coconut oil suffocate lice and make it harder to maintain a grip on hair. The lubricating nature of the oil also prevents the lice from moving around and continuing infestation on the head. Most lice treatments contain harsh chemicals, whereas coconut oil treatments(sometimes combined with apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil) are a much more gentle and natural choice. It also helps to repel future outbreaks, as lice like clean hair they can easily attach to rather than slick oily hair.

Coconut Oil Hair Masks

Coconut oil can be used as a deep conditioning hair mask on its own, or mixed with other ingredients. Why pay a fortune on salon hair treatments when you can create your own with great results? All natural coconut oil treatments can condition, strengthen, and make your hair shiny and smooth. One of the easiest methods is to massage warm coconut oil into the scalp, then brush through hair in sections to coat. Cover the hair with either saran wrap or a shower cap to keep the oil warm on your head. Leave on for 30 minutes or as long as overnight. One coconut oil mask recipe that works well is a combination of 3 tablespoons of organic virgin coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and one packet of gelatin (2.5 teaspoons) applied to hair and left on for 15-20 minutes. Applying these masks to dry hair maximizes absorption. Follow these treatments by washing and conditioning hair as normal. Some people may find that they need to shampoo twice in order to get all of the oil out of your hair. These masks can be used as often as your hair needs them or anytime you want to amp up the shine and silkiness of your hair.

How to Maximize Effectiveness

Pure, refined, virgin, organic coconut oil is recommended. The oil is in solid form up to 75 degrees, so warming is often necessary. The first step to using coconut oil is to massage it deep into your scalp. Remember, healthy hair begins deep in the hair follicles where blood carries nutrients through arteries connected to it. Work the oil in by gently massaging into both the hair and scalp.

Another tip is to give the oil time to soak in. The longer, the better. I suggest at least thirty minutes, preferably an hour (overnight is best).

Lastly, consider consuming the oil. Direct or topical application works best. But for optimum results, I recommend that you take it “internally” as well.

The oil of the humble coconut protects your hair from damage and brings out its natural color. For millennia, whole generations have relied on it to give their precious crowning glory radiance. Now, it’s our turn.Coconut oil is very safe, cost-effective and really works. So, go natural. Use coconut oil for beautiful hair!

Hi… Is it okay to shampoo hair everyday. My hair type is oily and it gets dirty easily. I apply coconut oil every night… and shampoo my hair in the morning using Jovees shampoo. Active ingredients are henna extract, ginseng extract, capsicum extract.

I just wanted to know whether everyday washing of hair is harmful or not? My hair is already chemically damaged due to rebonding. But it has started to improve because of coconut oil which I leave on my hair overnight. Thanks to coconut oil.

    Hi Sonal Kohli,

You can shampoo everyday as long as the shampoo you are using does not contain harmful synthetic chemicals. If you’re going to wash your hair daily, use a very mild and gentle shampoo.

A year ago I moved to the desert and have since been struggling with severe hard water damage to my hair.

My hair is long, super fine, auburn, wavy 2b, porous. I’ve never used any sort of heat on my hair nor hair styling aids. I color my hair (Herbatint by Antica) but the product I use actually helps to strengthen my hair for few days.

I’ve always shampooed daily. My staple used to be Ouidad Clear + Gentle shampoo. My hair has always grown like a weed and been thick and healthy. That is… until I moved to the desert. Yikes!

Now my hair is a disaster. I am on heavy mineral-laden well water. Shower filters only make a 20 percent dent on the condition of our water. My hair is suffering extensive breakage. I’ve already lost 2/3 of my entire hair volume due to breakage. It takes me upwards of 25-45 minutes to detangle my hair. It’s been very frightening and very sad. 🙂

Because I’ve never had to treat my hair with anything in the past, I have had a HUGE learning curve with what to do. In the past, I’ve only used shampoo. My hair has always hated conditioner (flop hair). I’ve never done protein treatments, etc.

In the past year, I’ve tried TONS of shampoo products…

From Malibu C well water shampoo (made my hair too floppy), Malibu C crystal gel

(left my hair very thin/fragile), Malibu C miracle repair (protein treatment that my hair hated… Left my hair floppy plus didn’t detangle it for more than a day), Therapy g (some stabilization initially but didn’t detangle at all and eventually things got worse again), Antoniou rezz a rect (horrible reaction… Tried this 3 days ago and my hair just hasn’t been the same since… frizzy, more breakage), Millcreek biotin shampoo (made my hair super dry, increased breakage, etc.).

You get the picture. Pretty much everything I have tried has WORSENED the hair breakage.

I recently purchased Tropical Traditions coconut oil because I heard that coconut oil can help for fried hair. I have read that it prevents protein loss in hair. But I’m not even sure that I have much protein left at this point.

Although my hair used to be strong and bouncy and stand up on its own in a daily updo, now it’s limp and dead looking. It now needs extra help to get the updo. I am lost.

Should I do some sort of protein treatment (like an egg) before I apply coconut oil? Or just apply coconut oil without a protein treatment prior?

I am actually quite frightened at this point of trying anything new but I know I have to keep pushing forward as there must be a solution out there.

Thanks for listening. Any input is greatly appreciated. 🙂

Hi everyone. I have read that using coconut oil is good for hair growth. My fringe is turning bald because I straightened it too much. I’m only 22 years old and I don’t want to get bald too soon.

I have been using hair treatment products but they don’t work at all. I want to try coconut oil but have never used it before.

My hair is curly-fine type and I also have a dandruff problem. Is coconut oil suitable for my hair? If I use the oil does it mean I shouldn’t be using other conditioners? Do I have to use other anti-dandruff shampoos and others that repair damaged hair?

    Hi,

Yes, coconut oil should be suitable for your hair as it is safe.

You can use other conditioners if you like as long as they are organic and all-natural. No harmful chemicals included.

I wanna try the VCO for my hair so bad because my hair is falling like crazy. I can go bald in a year. *oh hopefully NOTTTTT*

I’m so desperate. I asked my mum to help me buy and she bought this cold-pressed VCO for consumption.

My question is, can you use that in your hair? Or do I have to get the one specialized for hair?

HELP!!!!

    Hi Zee,

You can use Cold-Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). Absolutely!

Cold-pressed VCO can be used for hair, for consumption, for cooking, for skin, etc. You already have the right one!

For best/maximum results, massage a liberal (but not dripping wet) amount of coconut oil on your hair and scalp. Make sure you rub it in your scalp. The massaging action alone will help stimulate proper blood flow on your scalp which is important for hair growth.

Do this daily for at least a month. Chances are, good results will happen. This is exactly what I did for my hair fall problem four years ago. And I’m happy to share that I was able to stimulate growth of much needed new hair, especially up top.

    Hope this helps,
    Frederick

My hair is straight and very damaged from bleach and color.

I bought some coconut oil for hair at my local grocery store. I combed it through my hair until it looked wet, wrapped it with saran wrap, and left it overnight. I washed it out in the morning and the ends felt really brittle and dry. After using a good conditioner and leave in, it felt better to the touch.

I’m not sure if I’m using the product right or if it just won’t work right with my hair.

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi Amber,

To be honest, I have never encountered anyone whose hair became brittle and dry at the ends after using coconut oil. There is just nothing in this humble tropical oil that can make hair brittle and dry, as far as I know.

Based on your description of how you used it, I don’t see anything wrong with your approach. Have you tried it for the second or third time? Maybe it’s a first-time reaction? I don’t know, quite frankly.

I have been using coconut oil for many years now and it’s just hard for me to picture how coconut oil can actually cause hair ends to become brittle and dry.

Aside from combing, did you also massage the coconut oil on your hair and deep into your scalp? Maybe next time, you might want to wash it first before applying the oil. Or use a different covering for your hair. One that let’s your hair and scalp breathe more. Are you using a mild shampoo and not one with hidden, harsh chemicals? And what brand of coconut oil did you get? Cheap, low-quality oils can be useless…

These are some of the things or factors that came to my head upon analyzing your hair situation. I hope you find some of them useful.

    All the best,
    Frederick

For Women of Color – Coconut Oil is Best!

I am a woman of African-American descent, and as such, I’ve found it very difficult to find a hair care product that truly works. That is until I discovered coconut oil.

I have literally tried almost every “hair oil” there is to try on the hair care shelves, and all of them left my hair in worse condition than before. The reason? They contain petroleum and mineral oil. These are great for protecting your skin, but do nothing for beautifying your hair. Even the ones that have essential oils added to them are a waste as the petroleum literally blocks the oil from getting to where it needs to be.

I finally did some research and purchased a jar of pure coconut oil from the local health food store (yes, health food store; don’t even waste your time trying to find the good stuff at your local hair care shop). I was instantly amazed at the results. My hair was softer, shinier, and more manageable than it had ever been.

I’ve also noticed like the article states that coconut oil helps to keep my hair clean. I can go as much as two months without having to wash my hair because of styling product buildup.

I’ve been using coconut oil for over a year now and I will never go back to anything else. I don’t even need to use anything else because it replaces a whole dresser’s worth of hair care products. It’s truly phenomenal. I tell everyone I can about it.

If you’re like me and suffer from dandruff and dry scalp, you’ll definitely want to try it. My scalp does not itch anymore. And flakes? What flakes? Completely gone.

I know I sound like a commercial right now, but it’s true. So girls, stop wasting your money on products like African Pride, Dark & Lovely, Gentle Treatment, Optimum, etc. They may make your hair look great on the surface, but that’s all they’ll do. Use coconut oil; you won’t regret it. ^_^

Hello Coconut Oil! Bye Bye Olive Oil! I have always heard that olive oil is the best for the hair. WRONG! I used olive oil straight up on my hair, slept in it, woke up, washed it and my hair was lifeless and kind of greasy-looking.

As I was researching more on olive oil, I noticed a website on coconut oil. So I clicked the link, read all positive stories, went to the grocery store, and couldn’t wait to try it! I love anything and everything that has to do with coconuts.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Coconut oil in my hair just took my liking of coconuts to a whole other level. I used it the same way as I did with olive oil but was way happier with the results!

I have been growing out my hair for years and I always wanted my hair to be as long up to the lower part of my lower back. So basically, hair all the way to the top of my booty.

Well, my hair has been at a stopping point for over a year or two. After using coconut treatment once a week, I have conquered the hair length I’ve always wanted and my hair looks amazing the next day. Full of life and shine. Not that greasy, lifeless hair that I had with olive oil. I wonder if anyone carries coconut oil supplement? Hhmmm…

Please just try it. You could never go wrong. I just love how my whole head feels moisturized and healthy for days after my coconut oil treatment…

I posted the pics of my hair from the other day. I have naturally straight hair but wanted to show everyone the thinnest of it when I fix it curly.

Namaste,
Armanda

Help for 9 Year Old Daughter

My daughter had very beautiful natural curly hair. My cousin permed it when she was 4 and it started breaking off at the edges. I have been taking care of it by washing once a week, conditioning and trying to braid it at least 2 times a month. What else can I do to get the length back cuz she is so embarrassed? Please help! Thank u!

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi Daytria,

Treating the hair with heat, chemicals, etc will take its toll, sooner or later. Sometimes the harm caused to the hair is so severe that it takes a really long time to reverse the damage.

Apply or massage a generous, but not dripping wet, amount of coconut oil onto her hair and scalp twice daily. For best results, keep the oil on overnight. It’s important to gently massage the oil deep into her scalp and make sure each hair strand gets some oil all the way to the end.

Do this for the first week or so. It may take longer, like a month, but make sure you give coconut oil a fair try. I’ve seen and/or heard many people who’s hair was damaged in a variety of ways, usually after chemical application, and have found coconut oil to be the saving grace for their hair.

Use the mildest, gentlest shampoo and conditioner you can get your hands on. Use 100 percent natural, organic products. Try it.

Coconut Heaven! I’ve always had long think hair but I damaged it when I had it relaxed and generally began taking care of it myself.

I had tried coconut oil before and found it ok but was in stages of trying other products and processes so never went back to it. I then remembered it for some reason mainly because it’s the only hair oil I can buy from my local shops and, oh my, I brought a tub.

I am so pleased I’m keeping to coconut oil and hopefully I won’t have to travel to the city to buy it. Thanks and happy hair.

I’m not surprised at all coconut oil was the only hair oil available from your local shops. More and more coconut oil exporters based here in the Philippines are shipping to the UK.

I’ve also been getting a growing number of testimonials from Europe, particularly the UK, about how coconut oil, alone, has brought their hair back to life!

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, let me say that I love coconut oil in my hair. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now.

Just last night, I tried to curl my hair with my hair straightener which I have done heaps of times… And now that my hair is so soft and shinny, my hair won’t hold the curl at all…

Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, has anyone got any advice?

Thanks,

Coconut Oil Has Rid My Scalp of Dandruff!!

I had been suffering from dry scalp and dandruff for a long long time. I was prepared to go to a dermatologist to be treated with chemicals for this problem which I knew would damage my hair.

However, I purchased a jar of coconut oil (virgin unrefined) and would apply that to my scalp every few days and to my hair as a moisturizer every day. I am amazed! It’s been about a month and I have absolutely no dandruff or flakes whatsoever!!!!!

Highlights – Hair was Over-Processed

Hi. For the past 23 years, I have been having my hair highlighted 2-3 times a year. Being in the hairdressing/beauty field myself, I have always known what treatments to use on my hair after the chemical process to keep my hair in great condition…. I can truly say I have a beautiful head of hair….

A few months ago I allowed a different hairstylist to work on my hair. She over-processed my hair. I purchased the best of the best intensive treatments but the hair was far too damaged.

I was going to do a “Brittany Spears” and shave my head…. My Indian neighbor suggested I use 100% Coconut Oil and treat my hair for a couple of days. I know about Coconut Oil, but funny, I always thought people just had too much to say about it….

After all my years I have found the best of the best. Throw away all your expensive promising intensive treatments and use Coconut Oil – ladies and gents I promise you…. It is truly a “miracle oil.”

    Hi Mandi,

Coconut oil can repair hair damage caused by highlighting and other processes, which expensive and intensive hair treatments are incapable of repairing. Nature, indeed, knows best.

Being in the hairdressing industry where many of the products used are vastly “chemicalized,” so to speak, your experience should offer an inexpensive yet effective way of reversing the harm done to our crowning glory.

SHINY CONDITIONED HAIR!! I used to have dry hair. Now I use pure coconut oil.
-as a pre-shampoo treatment
-as a moisturizer at night when I am twisting my hair (in the morning I have ringlets)
-to seal the ends when I am setting my hair on flexirods

The change to the shine, health and hydration of my hair has been brilliant, with many people commenting. It is also fairly cheap to buy from the grocers.

Try it!!

INCREDIBLE. I have semi-heat damaged hair and started using pure coconut oil on a bit of a whim as somebody recommended it to me. I bought unrefined coconut oil from an Afro-Caribbean hair store and was surprised how inexpensive it was for such a huge tub, only £ 2.45!

I was told by the shop assistant to heat a tablespoon of it in a tub in the microwave, spread it through your hair, leave it overnight, and shampoo and condition as normal the next morning. My hair felt like silk as soon as it dried. My split ends looked totally flat and more manageable.

I got my friend hooked on this too now! I love it. I’ve tried tons of products but nothing compares!!

    Hi Casey,

Whether your hair has been damaged by too much sun exposure or by the harsh chemical ingredients of countless so called hair care products, coconut oil is bound to revitalize your crowning glory.

Time and again, I have seen coconut oil outperform well-known and expensive hair care treatment products. Coconut oil is the reason why Polynesian women have beautiful hair, even though their crowning glory is always exposed to the sun.

Coconut Oil Made My Hair Beautiful.

    Hi Candice,

Making hair and skin beautiful is one of the oldest uses of coconut oil. Actually, my coconut oil journey began because of what it did for my hair.

Since I was a kid, I have been hearing many good things about how it makes hair soft, radiant, and even helps in hair growth. It didn’t matter much back then, probably because I still had thick hair.

But decades later, when I needed to address my hair loss problem, coconut oil did not disappoint me. All those stories of how coconut oil made their hair beautiful were absolutely true!

Love Coconut Oil! I use coconut oil roughly three times a month and have noticed a massive difference in the condition and feel of my hair. I get a shine that lasts wash after wash, and it gets rid of flyaways that must annoy every girl out there.

I buy it in a bottle and let it heat up on a radiater so it melts, then massage it into my scalp and work my way down to the tips of my hair. I then wrap cling film around my hair and put a towel on my pillow.

Trust me guys, coconut oil works wonders and moisturizes your hair so well. Only problem is, you won’t stop touching your hair after!

I had Previously Damaged Hair. I got highlights and the hairdresser fried my hair as a result. I was so upset because my soft hair had transformed into a dry frizzy mess. I reminded me of wires… If I bent my hair it would stay that way. It was awful and I cringed every time I had to wash because my hair would knot up with the shampoo and it felt like it would break off (some of it did).

After a couple days of using coconut oil on my hair, I am delighted to report that it is back to its soft silk self…something “Wen” shampoo wasn’t able to do (tried it). I will be using coconut oil on my skin and hair from now on.

Just be sure to wash your hair out well so it doesn’t look oily. The first time I left the oil in my hair for about an hour and I wrapped it with saran wrap. Now, I apply it on my hair as I am ready to take a shower and proceed with the shower as usual.

Drastic Hair Loss – Help

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have been losing lots of hair ever since. From the past 4 months, I have been losing clumps of hair from the roots.

I am worried as simply running my fingers through my hair ends up with at least 20-30 strands of hair fallen from the roots. At this rate I might end up with no hair on my scalp!

I have been applying refined coconut oil for the last month, but it doesn’t seem to have fixed my hair fall issue.

Your help is appreciated.

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi Lina,

I understand your concern. Something like this happened to me, too.

I have been using coconut oil for my hair for years and my hair has been getting thicker with more body. I loved it! And I knew that the coconut oil had something big to do with it.

Then I got sick from Dengue, a mosquito bite-borne disease. My hair was falling off at an alarming rate. So alarming that in a matter of just days, I could already see my scalp up top. Like you, simply running my fingers through my hair made me lose significant amounts of hair.

After the illness, I resumed massaging coconut oil on my hair and scalp, just like before. It lessened the hair fall but I was still losing hair, big time. What I’m trying to say is…

Sometimes, even the great coconut oil can’t fully help with falling hair issues, because the problem lies deep within. It was only after I regained my usual health condition, pre-Dengue, that my hair started to stop falling and thicken again.

In your case, you should address your hypothyroidism first. Coconut oil can help with that! By the way, are you also ingesting the oil or are you just using it externally? If just externally, you might want to take it internally as well, as that will support normal thyroid function much better than external application.

    Hope this helps,
    Frederick

Regular Coconut Oil vs Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Hi,

I have yet to try coconut oil but I just purchased coconut oil and was wondering for your hair. Does it make a difference if it is regular or extra virgin? Thanks!

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi Alyssa,

It does make a difference. But in my opinion, regular or refined coconut oil is still a healthy oil, and the difference is more or less insignificant.

That’s because the Medium Chain Fatty Acid (MCFA) contents of virgin and refined coconut oils are essentially the same. MCFAs are the main reason behind the incredible health benefits of coconut oil.

I prefer Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) because I love the aroma of fresh coconuts. But from time to time, I do use refined or coconut cooking oil when I’ve ran out of VCO and don’t have time to make some at home.

    Hope this helps,

Really works!!! I am African American. My hair was short (although when I was younger it was longer). It seems to have hit a brick wall as it would only grow so much.

I started using VCO literally by accident and it works very well. It makes my hair straight and silky, and it’s thicker and longer than it has been in 20 years. So I am glad to have it and will use it for a long time to see how far it takes my hair journey.

    Hi Tammy,

It makes your hair “straight and silky,” not to mention, “thicker and longer?” Hair care advertisements promise all these benefits, right… But at what cost?

I mean, a good number of hair care products, at least here in the Philippines, contain significant amounts of harmful chemicals. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is all-good. It REALLY WORKS!

    Hi Molli,

It’s best to wash hair with a mild shampoo. Right after washing, massage a generous amount of coconut oil onto your hair and scalp. Then put a covering on your hair and sleep with it. In the morning, wash again with a mild shampoo. Your hair will feel soft and smooth…

Good for Swimming.

Good for swimming too. Swimming is part of my regular fitness routine because of its many benefits. Unfortunately, my frequent pool escapades wreak havoc on my skin and hair. That is, until I rediscovered coconut oil (my grandmother would apply it on my hair and skin when I was a kid).

Nowadays, before I head off for the pool, I apply coconut oil on my scalp, mix it with the sunblock cream to shield against the bacterial stuff in the pool, and then apply a little more afterwards, to rehydrate. I use it in small amounts on my face too at night.

The positive changes were gradual and unnoticeable, until I received comments here and there. Now, I incorporate it into my cooking too.

Not too much! It made my hair greasy and heavy, and by having to wash my hair extra to get the oil out, it actually dried it out.

So… yeah. Not gonna do that again.

    Hi,

Too much of a good thing (even coconut oil) can be a bad thing. Yes, possible.

I think the hair type is also a factor here, and certainly, the shampoo used to wash the hair.

At any rate, I believe it is better to use mild/gentle, all-natural shampoos most, if not, all of the time.

    Cheers,

Rich in Colour. Coconut oil restores the rich black in your hair.

Coconut oil is awesome stuff.

I’m 16. I bleached my hair. It was severely damaged and was just breaking off. I died my hair brown, which is “my natural color.”

I started using 100% coconut oil last month and it’s amazing. It makes my hair so straight and soft.

Before coconut oil, I couldn’t even brush my hair. Now, I can just run my hands through it, no problem. I see a dramatic change in my hair.

I use it once a week. I sleep with it then shower in the morning and wash it out with shampoo. That’s it. It’s awesome.

How Long Does It Take?

Hi. I really want to know how long it will take until I can see results of improved hair growth. I currently dislike how thin my hair is and I’m losing faith already!

    Hi Jessi,

Based on all the studies and testimonials I’ve read and witnessed with my own eyes, including my very own experience, you should give coconut oil at least a couple of months before you can see some meaningful results of improved hair growth.

In my case for example, it took about two months when I realized that my hair up top, which is my main problem area, had gotten considerably thicker. Plus, my hairline also stopped receding and new hair grew in those areas.

Keep massaging coconut oil liberally on your hair and scalp (make it twice a day at first), and avoid stressing yourself out. Stress alone is known to cause nutrients not to reach your hair follicles, hence, minimal-to-zero hair growth.

I’ve Tried It Twice 🙂 Okay, I used to have extremely flaky scalp. But after applying coconut oil overnight twice, flakes have lessened. 🙂 That’s good news I guess.

One thing, my hair is currently experiencing “hairfall.” And I have visible bald spots/lines everywhere. I want to know if it is possible for my hair to grow again and have thicker, fuller hair? How long will that take until I can see the results?

    Hi Jules,

Yes, good news indeed! Coconut oil has helped many people with their flaky scalp problem, including yours truly.

Yes again! It’s certainly possible for your hair to grow again and have thicker, fuller hair. How long it will take until you see results? Give it at least a couple of months to see some meaningful results.

Most people report significant results 2-3 months after using coconut oil for the first time. In my case, it was after two months or so of massaging coconut oil on my hair and scalp twice a day when I noticed my hair thickening, especially up top.

    All the best,

I am so gonna get coconut oil first thing tomorrow! Hello. After reading all of your posts, I’m feeling so comforted again. Numerous websites have been saying how impossible and costly it would be to fix my problematic scalp. Not to mention the possibilities of me having thyroid problems and all are just terrifying to even imagine.

But now that everyone is saying how godly coconut oil is, I’m feeling hopeful again! I will post up about how it works for me after I’ve tried it for a week! Love y’all!

    Hi Jules,

We look forward to your testimonial! Don’t forget to rub coconut oil gently into your scalp. The massaging action alone will stimulate proper blood flow, which means proper delivery of nutrients…

Coconut Oil Skin Benefits

I mix coconut oil with shea butter (organic, of course) on my face once a week. Using black soap, lemon juice (pure), Dr. Bronner peppermint soap, mixed with brown sugar or baking soda (I use baking soda because the brown sugar is a little abrasive for my skin) before bed gives me fabulous results. The next day my skin is brighter and clear.

I tried it with the shea butter but the results weren’t the same. I also used coconut oil for a bad case of sunburn after vacationing in the Caribbean and it worked very well. Stay indoors and stay out in the sun with coconut oil. If not, you will fry like a chicken and sweat to death.

Help.. I would like to know exactly how to use coconut oil.

My hair has been falling out for quite some time. It is also very brittle and thin. I have read several of the comments but am still not sure exactly when and how often to use the coconut oil.

I’ve heard some shampoo and use the oil as a conditioner. But then, do they wash it out again? I’ve heard some leave it in overnight (every night)? I don’t want my hair to be oily all the time, but I am willing to try anything to get possible regrowth and healthy hair. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi Michelle,

The most effective way to use coconut oil, in my experience, is to massage it liberally on your hair and scalp (damp hair is ideal) before going to bed. Put a covering on your head (shower cap, etc.) to avoid staining your sheets, although, of all the hair oils, coconut oil stains the least.

Wash your hair first thing in the morning using the mildest and gentlest shampoo you can find (organic, all-natural is preferable). Each time I do this, my hair feels so soft and manageable. This is exactly what I did to effectively control dandruff and reverse hair loss.

I had the same hair loss problem as you. I thought I was going to get bald within a few years, but thanks to coconut oil, it wasn’t the case. My hair stopped receding and is now significantly thicker. All I did was use coconut oil. Well, I also stopped using harsh shampoos and conditioners. And now, I only shampoo my hair every other day.

Hope you find this useful, Michelle. I wish you all the best in your coconut oil journey.

    All the best,
    Frederick

Is it the Same Thing?

The coconut oil I have says 100% pure coconut oil on it. Is that the same thing as Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)? Because I know that VCO is better for your hair.

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi C,

There is a good possibility that it is one and the same. Although most manufacturers use “virgin” coconut oil, there are some that prefer “pure” coconut oil instead. But there is a better way to make sure you’re getting the real deal.

Make sure that the oil smells and tastes like fresh coconuts. And if in liquid form, the oil must be water white in color.

If you’re not familiar yet with the color, aroma and flavor of all-natural coconut oil, I suggest you try another brand or two, even more, to have a comparison.

    All the best,
    Frederick

Amazing Detangler!!

I am a black woman who has recently decided to wear natural hair without any chemicals. It’s been two years and I’ve struggled to find different products that actually work with my hair.

In a book that I’ve been reading recently (Going Natural and Loving it) I found a recipe for a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment that used coconut oil. After trying this treatment, I realized that I love coconut oil for my hair. Now, I use it to detangle my hair after shampooing and it works better than anything else I’ve tried.

    Hi Tiffany,

The amount of chemicals being put in hair care products as well as countless other products is atrocious. It’s a good thing coconut oil is always there to the rescue and to provide a chemical-free way to detangle hair naturally.

It all starts with trying because coconut oil doesn’t take long at all to reveal its amazing hair care benefits. Compared to other hair oils, coconut oil can easily penetrate the hair shaft to reduce hair protein loss and to keep it smooth, without that messy feeling.

    All the best,

My hair is rejuvenated! Thanks to coconut oil!

Coconut oil for hair has a whole bunch of benefits. It has been used for millennium by women in India and Asia.

This oil is truly amazing because it heals, strengthens, and adds shine to dull, dry or damaged hair. Coconut oil goes back to the old tradition of oiling hair which is still carried out by women all over the globe.

How coconut oil helped me: My dream was to have long hair. When I was little my hair cascaded past my back and was hard to manage, so my mother got it cut into a bob. This bugged me a lot.

I really loved Indian women and their long hair that was braided and oiled. I am no Indian. Being Caucasian, my hair wasn’t as strong or luscious as Indian hair.

I discovered oiling hair when I was 10. I have been doing it ever since and boy has it helped! My hair is much more manageable and longer now! I remember my favorite coconut oil, parachute oil, which I used every second day. Always buy pure organic oil without any preservatives or chemicals. You will see the results.

Alexis

This is my coconut oil miracle. Coconut oil was truly a miracle for my straight, on the thinner side, hair. This oil did not weigh my hair down and it is easier to wash out than almond oil or olive oil.

Coconut oil healed my hair. It nourished all the way into the cortex and smoothed the cuticle. For manageable healthy hair, try coconut oil, and you will see results the next day!

The best way to use coconut oil: Heat the oil (if it is in solid form), pour some amount onto palm, rub together, massage scalp. Repeat until your hair is completely saturated. I prefer doing this at night and sleeping on it. This ensures maximum absorption of the oil into your scalp.

The benefits: Shiny, healthy hair. Longer hair, too, if done 2-3 times a week. You will see the results!

Alexis

Hello. I will start using coconut oil. I’ve never used coconut but have been reading about its benefits and results. I’m a 55 year old black female and of course is dealing with hair thinning, some from age and also over-processed hair. I will start using coconut oil and let you know how it’s doing for me. Hoping for promising results.

    Hi Joyce,

I’m glad you have decided to begin your coconut oil journey! Actually, many people’s first encounter, so to speak, with coconut oil is they want to see what it can do for their hair and skin.

Use coconut oil every day for at least a week or so and you should see encouraging results. Don’t forget to massage it deep into your scalp. Wishing you all the best in your journey!

LIKE SILK! I decided to use coconut oil when I read on Google that coconut oil mixed with olive oil, honey, and some mayo would make a very replenishing hair mask.

So that very same day, I went to Whole Foods, and bought some honey and coconut oil.

All I can say is 5 stars *****

I normally do not wash my hair more than twice a week, but now I want to wash it every other day to feel the benefit 24/7…

I can honestly say… SCREW ALL 80 DOLLAR PRODUCTS.

Go natural, baby!!

I absolutely love coconut oil for my hair!

Oh my God, coconut oil! Where have you been all my life? I’m now addicted to using coconut oil as a conditioner for my hair.

I leave it in all night and wash it out in the morning. Although it takes three washes to get all the oil out of my hair (I have really long hair so might not be a problem for everyone), when I’m finished my hair is so soft and shiny. I feel like I’m in a hair commercial.

I’m always flipping around and touching my hair. I just can’t believe it! And each time it got softer and softer. And it lasts wash after wash. I have some really damaged ends so it didn’t do as much for them but I soaked them with argan oil overnight with the coconut oil and they are soft and healthy now, too.

If you haven’t tried coconut oil for your hair you should go and do it now! You have no idea what your missing.

Coconut oil is the very best! I have hair that became curly and dry after having my son 8 years ago. I love the outdoor summer months here in the Northwest. They are the only sunny and dry times to play outdoors.

Swimming, buzzing around in the convertible, camping, riding quads… All are so much fun, but the wind and the sun damage that added to my already dry hair meant I would have to cut my hair short every fall.

Enter Coconut Oil! Now, I take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and melt it in the microwave for about 20 seconds or until melted and warm, but NOT hot. I divide my hair into sections and work it into each section.

My next step is to work it into my scalp. Once it is worked in, I cover my head with a cheap plastic shower cap (I’ve used a plastic grocery bag in a pinch also.). I let it set for about an hour while I do other things around the house.

I wash and condition as usual and my hair is awesome for about a week! No more frizzies, no more knots and snarls, and my curls are not weighed down. They have great definition and have bouncy freedom.

I just went to the salon today and guess what? My hair is still between my shoulders! I had a normal 1/2″ trim for the first time in years! Coconut oil is a true gift and I cannot recommend its use enough!

Coconut Oil for Soft and Shiny Hair

Like everybody, I also used to search treatments and tips for healthy hair on the internet. The best and cheapest way I saw was using coconut oil.

I am now just 16 years old but I don’t have thick and strong hair. I started using coconut oil… Really, I just started it as a test and by doing so, I’m understanding its advantages.

My hair is becoming softer and my hair loss is slowly decreasing. My friends said that my hair is thicker than before. I am really amazed. I suggest you try it, too. Try using coconut oil. It really works….

Love Coconut Oil!

Coconut oil is a cooling, gentle moisturizer which penetrates hair follicles and creates healthy, smooth, lustrous locks. Massage scalp weekly with coconut oil to get longer, thicker hair.

Coconut oil provided shine for my hair. For months I was using olive oil for my hair and it did nothing but sit there and make my hair greasy. Coconut oil on the other hand penetrates my hair and made it healthier.

I have also been using coconut oil on my face nightly before I sleep and I see results already!! My skin looks brighter and my acne has cleared up.

Coconut Oil and Unwanted Hair?

Hi. Coconut oil can help moisturize and grow your hair, but how about hair on other areas such as legs and arms? I’d like to use coconut oil as a body lotion, however, I’m so afraid of getting more unwanted hair.

Reply
    Frederick Valencia

    Hi Jess,

Coconut oil will only help grow your hair on areas where it is supposed to grow and how much it usually grows for your unique situation.

To prove that, I have been massaging coconut oil on my face twice a day since 2007 but I never grew any new hair on my face or did my face hair thickened even just a little bit.

Applying coconut oil on your legs and arms won’t make unwanted or additional hair grow all of a sudden on those areas. It doesn’t work that way.
    Hope this helps,
    Frederick

Coconut oil is a best kept beauty secret. I am an African American female with thick, relaxed hair. I’ve recently started using pure coconut oil on my hair as a pre-shampoo treatment. I would mix it with any of my conditioners or just apply it alone, then wrap my hair with plastic wrap overnight.

After washing it the next morning and roller setting, I can not believe the results!!! Wow! My hair is bouncy, shiny and so silky. I can’t stop touching it. The sheen usually lasts for a few days without needing any extra oil.

I can’t get over how soft and healthy my hair has become since using this product. Pure coconut oil is a must have for every hair care regimen.

I give it 5+ stars!!!!
