Help for 9 Year Old Daughter

by Daytria Muckelroy
(Corpus Christi, Texas)

My daughter had very beautiful natural curly hair. My cousin permed it when she was 4 and it started breaking off at the edges. I have been taking care of it by washing once a week, conditioning and trying to braid it at least 2 times a month. What else can I do to get the length back cuz she is so embarrassed? Please help! Thank u!

Hi Daytria,

Treating the hair with heat, chemicals, etc will take its toll, sooner or later. Sometimes the harm caused to the hair is so severe that it takes a really long time to reverse the damage.

Apply or massage a generous, but not dripping wet, amount of coconut oil onto her hair and scalp twice daily. For best results, keep the oil on overnight. It's important to gently massage the oil deep into her scalp and make sure each hair strand gets some oil all the way to the end.

Do this for the first week or so. It may take longer, like a month, but make sure you give coconut oil a fair try. I've seen and/or heard many people who's hair was damaged in a variety of ways, usually after chemical application, and have found coconut oil to be the saving grace for their hair.

Use the mildest, gentlest shampoo and conditioner you can get your hands on. Use 100 percent natural, organic products. Try it.

Relaxing Young Children's Hair
by: Anonymous

Please be aware that it is not recommended that children's hair should ever be relaxed until they are at least 16 years old. This is because their hair is still growing and delicate, and subjecting the hair to such strong chemicals not only takes its toll.

But if they are pre-pubescent, in other words not started their periods, then a lot of the chemicals in hair shampoos and conditioners for processed hair contain female hormones which gets into the system of young children and can make them start their periods as young as 6. Manufacturers do not tell you that but bear this in mind.

Also, always use shampoos and conditioners for European hair for young Afro-Caribbean children as the chemicals, amongst others, do not contain petroleum and lanolin oils.

Chemical Damage to Hair
by: Anonymous

Hi. Just want to say use coconut oil....

I had over-processed hair from hi-lights, hair was so badly damaged that after trying everything on the market, my hair was still in very bad condition. I thought the best would be to cut all my hair off....

A neighbor told me to try coconut oil. Well, I never had to cut my hair, and in all my years, my hair is in the best condition ever!!!!

A trim is the first step and I would recommend a trim every 6 weeks. Apply coconut oil on your hair from roots to ends every second day. Leave in for at least 1 hour.

If you can sleep with it in, even better. Shampoo hair twice and apply surface conditioner. You are going to be shocked by the results.
