For Women of Color - Coconut Oil is Best!

by Angela
(Champlin, MN)

I am a woman of African-American descent, and as such, I've found it very difficult to find a hair care product that truly works. That is until I discovered coconut oil.

I have literally tried almost every "hair oil" there is to try on the hair care shelves, and all of them left my hair in worse condition than before. The reason? They contain petroleum and mineral oil. These are great for protecting your skin, but do nothing for beautifying your hair. Even the ones that have essential oils added to them are a waste as the petroleum literally blocks the oil from getting to where it needs to be.

I finally did some research and purchased a jar of pure coconut oil from the local health food store (yes, health food store; don't even waste your time trying to find the good stuff at your local hair care shop). I was instantly amazed at the results. My hair was softer, shinier, and more manageable than it had ever been.

I've also noticed like the article states that coconut oil helps to keep my hair clean. I can go as much as two months without having to wash my hair because of styling product buildup.

I've been using coconut oil for over a year now and I will never go back to anything else. I don't even need to use anything else because it replaces a whole dresser's worth of hair care products. It's truly phenomenal. I tell everyone I can about it.

If you're like me and suffer from dandruff and dry scalp, you'll definitely want to try it. My scalp does not itch anymore. And flakes? What flakes? Completely gone.

I know I sound like a commercial right now, but it's true. So girls, stop wasting your money on products like African Pride, Dark & Lovely, Gentle Treatment, Optimum, etc. They may make your hair look great on the surface, but that's all they'll do. Use coconut oil; you won't regret it. ^_^

Minimal Use
by: Peter

Coconut oil is fantastic! I only use it 2-3 times a week and that's enough to make my hair shiny and beautiful. I may only have short hair but it's very conceivable that even if my hair was really long, coconut oil will be able to help a lot. I've seen it with my own eyes already!

Response to Usage
by: Angela

Hi. I use coconut oil just like any regular oil or pomade that you can buy on the shelf. I apply it directly to my scalp and then massage it into my hair. It's great.

Yes, I really don't use any other hair products because I no longer need them. This includes leave-in conditioners, oil moisturizers, gels, etc.

I do still wash my hair when needed but that's it. My hair seems to respond better to less product. All that other stuff causes too much buildup and gunk. Less is best for me.

Wow, this is so exciting! How and when do you use it? And are you saying you never use hair products anymore?

In Response to What Coconut Oil I Use
by: Angela

I use Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. You can buy it online at The Vitamin Shoppe for about $25.00 for a 54 ounce jar. It lasts me about 4-5 months so it's a great deal.

The shampoo I use is Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Shampoo and Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. Those you can get at Walgreens. Best shampoo I have ever used.

Great Results on Hair
by: Pat Beatty

I am not the writer of the original comment, but coconut oil for hair is really great. I used it and it was almost like a touch up to my perm. My hair was so nice and shiny and smooth.

Usually my hair is dull. I am 57 years old , but only have a little gray at the front. My grays even looked better.

Since I was using coconut oil anyway, I put some on my skin. It is truly heavenly.

This morning, I put a nice big spoonful in my coffee. Easy to take. So many ways to use Coconut Oil. Thank you God for all your blessings and wonderful nature!
